Which empire was the greatest empire in history? Though I might be been biased as Im British I think it was our own. I think this due to its size the largest in history, fact and influence on the past an present e.g. the English language been the most important language in modern day.

In terms of size and importance in shaping the modern world it would have to be the British, as the pioneers of the industrial age they were directly responsible for the modern age.
